DENTAL BIOFILM AS A PRECURSOR OF ORAL CAVITY DISEASES

Microorganisms that live in equilibrium can colonize the oral cavity, distributed in the dental biofilm, oral epithelium and on the dorsum of the tongue. Dental biofilm is the etiological cause of the main diseases of the oral cavity, dental caries and periodontal disease. Disorganization or mechanical removal of the biofilm contributes to the remission or installation of these oral diseases. As strategies to prevent dental caries and periodontal disease are the practices of biofilm removal and control through mechanical control (tooth brushing and flossing), diet control, and with the support of chemical control using antimicrobial solutions. The objective of this work is to present a literature review on the main diseases that affect the oral cavity and the strategies to control these pathologies through the use of antimicrobial solutions.
