    Resumo

Purpose: to identify the factors associated with the onset of complications at the surgical site of oncological patients. Method: case-control study, carried out in a medium-sized tertiary hospital, from January to October 2018. The sample was composed of 124 oncological patients who underwent surgery on the pelvis and abdomen. Data were obtained by consulting the medical records. The binary logistic regression model was used for statistical analysis with a significance level of 5%. Results: The independent variables that presented a greater chance of complications in the surgical wound site were: polypharmacy, antibiotic, anticoagulant, antipsychotic, being underweight, low serum albumin and hemoglobin, and surgical wound in the abdomen. Hysterectomy was associated with a lower chance of the occurrence of a complex surgical wound. Conclusion: after controlling the confounding variables, polypharmacy, use of antibiotics and being underweight remained significantly associated with a higher chance of complications in the surgical site.
